Ailey II is universally recognized for merging the spirit and energy of the most talented young dancers with the passion and creative vision of today’s outstanding emerging choreographers. The company embodies Alvin Ailey’s pioneering mission to establish an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training, and community programs for all people. Under the artistic direction of Troy Powell, the Ailey spirit shines as this critically acclaimed company presents an exhilarating and diverse repertoire of timeless classics and thrilling new works. » The ASC has been honored this season to present a residency program with the Ailey organization that culminates with this celebratory public performance. During the residency, dancers from Ailey II and teaching artists from Ailey’s Arts In Education program will have worked with more than 150 students in our area, resulting in a student recital in early 2014.

For more than four decades, Steve Winwood has remained a primary figure in rock ‘n’ roll, a respected innovator who has helped to create some of the genre’s most celebrated achievements. Winwood burst into prominence in 1963 with the Spencer Davis Group and since that time his celebrated skills as a composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist have developed an impressive catalog of popular music. Throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s, Winwood found success, including co-founding the popular British-group Traffic and creative partnerships with Cream guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker. » 1977’s solo debut Steve Winwood signaled a bold new artistic direction, with landmark solo albums including the Grammy Award winning Back In The High Life and Roll With It. Winwood’s solo career has yielded a rich catalog of popular songs including “Back In The High Life,” “When You See A Chance,” “Valerie,” and “Higher Love”.

Winner of the 2014 Naumburg International Vocal Competition and the 2012 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, soprano Julia Bullock has been hailed by The New York Times as an “impressive, fast-rising soprano … poised for a significant career.” » Bullock has performed the title roles in the Juilliard Opera productions of Massenet’s Cendrillon and Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, to rave reviews. » This season, she reprises the title role in Henry Purcell’s The Indian Queen, directed by Peter Sellars at the Perm Opera House, and at English National Opera. » In 2013, she made her San Francisco Symphony debut in West Side Story, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas; an album of the concert is available on the orchestra’s label. » She is pursuing her Artist Diploma with Edith Bers at The Juilliard School.

Join us for MARDI GRAS in MAY as we present a true icon of American culture, the incomparable Dr. John. This performance will feature a career retrospective including his biggest hits as well as music from his most recent release, The Spirit of the Satch, Dr. John’s tribute to the late Louis Armstrong. » Dr. John’s musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex, and Frankie Ford. A legend was born with his breakthrough 1968 album Gris-Gris, introducing to the world his unique blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock, and Creole roots.
